Rescheduled to January 26 because of the projected snowstorm on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Alethea “Lee” Yates, author of Bedford (part of the Postcard History Series), and former president, executive director, and newsletter editor of the Bedford Historical Society, will speak on “Bedford’s Forgotten Stories” at The Bedford Lyceum this Sunday, December 15, at 9:30 a.m. The Lyceum meets most Sundays in Room 202 at First Parish on the Common. The program is free of charge and the public is invited. The building is totally accessible.

Prior to the post – World War II construction boom, Bedford was considered to be a sleepy farming community, yet it hosted an amazing array of interesting endeavors. To name just a few, there were companies like the Bedford Safety Razor Company and the Oakland Boat & Canoe Livery; Lexington Park (mostly in Bedford, partly in Lexington) which, among other things, featured a merry-go-round, toboggan slide, electric fountains, a dance hall, and a zoo; the Maryvale Seminary; and, of course, the grand Sweetwater Hotel at Bedford Springs. All of these were connected to Boston by extensive railroad lines and Bedford’s trolley system.

Lee will show wonderful old pictures from the book, will tell forgotten stories from Bedford’s past, AND she will share some gems that do not even appear in the book!

Her book will be available for purchase and signing (or bring your own for Lee to sign if you’ve already purchased one). After this hearing this talk, in the future you’ll not be able to drive on some of Bedford’s roads without imagining how they might have looked 50, 100 or 200 years ago.
