As their first order of business on October 7, the Selectmen unanimously approved the appointment of John Premack of Stonegate Lane to serve a term ending in 2016 on the Bicycle Advisory Committee. Premack has lived in Bedford for five years and said he has “only recently escaped from a demanding work schedule,” freeing time to become involved in community affairs.

Premack is a retired news photographer who formerly served on the Bedford Television Board of Directors. He said that his interest in biking—particularly in bike safety—spans 40 years and that he has traveled the Minuteman Bikeway since it opened in 1993.

The purpose of the Bicycle Advisory Committee, according to the Town’s website, is to “encourage use of bicycles by Bedford residents, workers, and visitors in order to decrease traffic congestion and air pollution, and increase recreational opportunities.” Responsibilities of the Committee include “monitoring activities on the bike paths, planning additional bike paths, signage and facilities for bikers, and working to make bicycle use in Bedford safe.”

Although Premack stated that he is away four months of the year, his interest and willingness to serve prevailed in the Selectmen’s vote to appoint him to the Bicycle Advisory Committee.
