Submitted by Paolo Sepe for GU10 soccer
It was a beautiful October evening this past Thursday for a GU10 Bedford Derby between the Socker Rockers and Breakers.
The Socker Rockers came out fast and benefited from a dubious handling call by impartial referee Julia Sepe who awarded them a penalty kick. Kathrine Vaughan stepped up and hit strong shot that Sophie Van Spaendonck deflected but was unable to keep out. The Socker Rockers pressure continued with aggressive play from Keira Doyle and Amber Hurley.
The Breakers defense withstood the pressure with solid defending from Astrid Yerardi and Olivia Winter and some great saves from Sophie Van Spaendonck. The Breakers came back with some great chances by Mary Couvee only to be thwarted by some fine saves by Anna Knight. Soon after Olivia Winter unleashed a pass the sent Grace Sepe in on a breakaway that she slotted away to tie the score.
More Socker Rocker pressure came and only some great goalkeeping by Astrid Yerardi kept the ball out of the net. Just before halftime Lauren Barnes and Audrey Leida were able to unlock the Breaker defense and put the Socker Rockers up 3-1. Lauren Barnes and Makaela Kirkland made many marauding in the runs matched by stalwart defense from Mary Stewart and Isabella Seldon. Grace Sepe put a solid shift in net before a slick goal from Makaela Kirkland. Mary Stewart and Isabella Seldon combined on various offensive forays pressuring for a goal only to be stopped by Shannon Young in goal.
Olivia Winter made some great saves to keep the Breakers in the game before Kathrine Vaughan scored her second goal to put the game out of reach.
Good fun and great sportsmanship was shown by both teams.
