Bedford organizations are preparing to celebrate Halloween: A couple of parties for Bedford’s youngest, a screening (or screaming???) of the original Phantom of the Opera, with live accompaniment on an historic Hook and Hastings organ, a paranormal ghost hunter, stories and folk songs at the library, and a children’s Halloween festival at New England Nurseries.

New England Nurseries: 4th Annual Halloween Festival – 11 am to 1 pm

The 4th annual Halloween Festival will take place at New England Nurseries on Saturday, October 26th from 11am-1pm. Admission is FREE, and there will be Witch Hunts, Pumpkin Bowling, Musical Chairs and a Hay Maze, as well as refreshments. Kids of all ages are invited, and we would LOVE to see your costumes!

Note: The festival’s date was incorrectly advertised elsewhere as Sunday, October 27th; the CORRECT date is Saturday, October 26th. New England Nurseries apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused.

First Parish: Phantom of the Opera and Masquerade Ball – at 6 pm

On October 26th, the Phantoms (or at least one) will show themselves in the classic movie The Phantom of the Opera.  This one of the first “Horror Movies” ever made, an original silent movie starring Lon Chaney.

This special  showing arranged by the Music Committee at First Parish on the Common will have live improvised accompaniment by Master organist Peter Krasinski.  Peter will provide to the movie on our own historic Hook and Hastings pipe organ, just as they did back before “talkies” took over, with special effects and surprises by our resident spook-master Karl Winkler and friends.

PLEASE NOTE: While the movie is unrated, parents are cautioned that the movie and effects may be too spooky for young kids.  Children and teens under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Immediately after the movie, the first-ever First Parish Masquerade Ball begins in the meeting house’s Common Room. Movie-goers and others are invited to enjoy food, fun, and dancing to classic tunes in a Halloween vein.  The Junior Youth Group will offer refreshments in the Phantom Café.

Suggested Donation at the Elm St. door: Adults $17, Seniors & Kids (under age 18) $12, with $2 off if you come in costume. The evening’s Net proceeds will benefit First Parish and Junior Youth fundraising for the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation.  Visit the church website, www.uubedford.org or call 781-275-7794 for further information.

Bedford Free Public Library: Shivers and Shudders with Tim Van Egmond

Popular folksinger and storyteller Tim Van Egmond will bring spell-binding tales and songs of the supernatural from diverse cultures for kids in grades 3 to 8 to the meeting room at the Bedford Library from 3 to 4 pm.

MCC Bedford: Ghost Hunters from the New England Ghost Project will visit at 8 pm

Middlesex Community College will host paranormal ghost hunter Ron Kolek and investigators from the New England Ghost Project at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the Bedford Campus Center, 591 Springs Road. This event is free and open to the public.

Just in time for Halloween, Kolek will lead participants in a live paranormal investigation of the Bedford campus. “Last year, we took a group tour through the Bedford campus. Each person was given one of the devices and scanners Kolek uses on his investigations,” said Michael Rideout, one of MCC’s Academic Advisors.  “Our investigation revealed energetic activity on our scanners in a variety of areas from the fitness trail to the attic in the South Academic building.”

This event is sponsored by the MCC Activities Crew. For more information about The New England Ghost Project’s visit to Middlesex, contact Funmi Oyekunle at [email protected] or call 978-656-3394.
