Emerson Hospital has been honored with an “A” Hospital Safety ScoreSM by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits that updated its Hospital Safety Scorecard this fall. Bedford is among the 25 town’s in Emerson’s area of care.

The Hospital Safety Score was calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel using publicly available data from more than 2,600 acute care hospitals nationwide on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections. Hospitals were assigned an A, B, C, D, or F for their overall performance.

“We are extremely proud of this national distinction,” said Christine Schuster, president and CEO of Emerson Hospital. “It affirms not only our commitment to patient safety through clinical excellence complemented by compassionate care, but to transparency that provides critical safety information to the public and encourages continuous improvements in care.”

The latest Hospital Safety Score used 28 evidence-based measures of hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe. That figure reflects two new safety measures, with the overall number comprised of 15 related to process and structure, and 13 outcome-based.

Performance measures are collected from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. In addition, secondary data is used from the American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey.

I love Emerson Hospital, and have been there many times over the years for adult and pediatric care. However, public employees in Bedford who are now having to use the GIC health insurance will note that under Tufts Navigator, the co-pay for inpatient care at Emerson is $700 for adults. (Pediatric is $300) Looking in the handbook for local hospital co-pays, Newton-Wellesly, also receiving a Hospital Safety Score of A, only charges a $300 inpatient co-pay for adults. FYI… it pays to read your member handbook before you need hospital care.
