At each of the launch events Rotary volunteers will:

  • Demonstrate how meal packaging works
  • Share our experience from the 2013 Pay it Forward 15,000 meal packaging event
  • Discuss how supporting the Meals for Haiti event could help you an your organization achieve your 2014 goals

To fight hunger locally, Rotary will also collect food for the Bedford Community Table and Food Pantry.

Meals for Haiti – The Bedford Rotary’s Pay it Forward initiative for 2014

The only meal these kids get is at school. Without meal support, most must return home at noon, unfed and their education cut short. There is typically no food waiting for them at home, either.
—  Ralph Hammond, Rotarian and Bedford Citizen of the Year for 2013-2014

On Saturday, April 26, 2014, teams of volunteers will assemble in Bedford to package 285,120 meals — enough to fill an entire shipping container! The meals will be delivered to Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere. They will help ensure that children receive one hot meal per day, helping meet nutrition needs in the short term, while encouraging the education needed to break the cycle of illiteracy and poverty. The meals will be delivered by our distribution partner, Stop Hunger Now.

The quarter million meal packaging event will require the Rotary Club of Bedford to raise more than $70,000 and organize at least 1,000 volunteers. Sponsors in categories from $500 to $10,000 will be needed to assure the success of Meals for Haiti, along with organizations willing to promote the event and provide volunteers.

Organizing this event will certainly pull Bedford together as a community, and the Rotary is confident it will help strengthen connections with each participating organization.
