At the Planning Board meeting on August 27, Assistant Planner Catherine Perry reported that, after first being introduced in 2011, a project to build 70 mostly one-bedroom apartment units at the Edith Nourse Rogers VA Hospital is once again underway. The housing is intended for veterans, age 55 and older, who need services provided by the hospital and who would otherwise be at risk for homelessness.

Peabody Properties, a real estate management firm, would operate the apartment facility. The site plan—described as being “by the old chicken coops” north of the golf course—“will come under the normal Town review process,” although Perry said that services like police and fire would be negotiated.

The building as planned is envisioned as energy-efficient, meriting LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) silver status. The units would add to the 18.3% of all housing in Bedford that is deemed “affordable.”
