With funds approved by a Community Preservation article at Annual Town Meeting, the two tennis courts located at John Glenn Middle School will be completely reconstructed, including better drainage and new fencing around the perimeter. On August 5, after a short presentation by Adrienne St. John of the DPW, the Selectmen approved and signed a contract for $124,697 with Vermont Recreational, the lower of two bidders for the project.

St. John told the Selectmen that she had visited another tennis court project at the Acton, MA middle school completed by Vermont Recreational and, based on the quality of the work done there, felt confident in the company’s standards.

Before a vote was taken to approve the contract, Selectman Caroline Fedele asked if a practice wall or backboard could be added to at the middle school courts because, she noted, the one existing wall at the high school was heavily used. St. John and DPW Director Roy Sorenson said that they did not believe Vermont Recreational would be interested in adding a wall or board to the project but they would look into the matter separately to see what could be done.

The project as originally specified will begin this fall, St. John said, “while the ground is still warm.”
