At their July 1 meeting, the Selectmen named Lewis Putney to serve a three year term on the Board of the Council on Aging (COA). Putney has been a Bedford Constable for 15 years and is also currently a member of the Housing Authority.

When asked what sparked his interested in serving on the Board of the COA, Putney responded that he is at the Center “almost every day” and has become very involved in the activities there. Putney said he was instrumental in helping to raise funds for new pool tables in 2006 and that he also helped bring the Massachusetts Senior Games pool tournament to Bedford from Ludlow this year.

Putney is also interested in organizing Bridge lessons and Cribbage tournaments at the Center.

“I want to get more involved in decision-making at the COA,” Putney added.

The Council on Aging is a Town department that receives funding from Town, public and private grants, program fees, individual donations and bequests. Its board consists of nine members, who are appointed by the Selectmen. The mission of the Board of the COA is to enhance the health and well-being of Bedford’s 60-and-older population, which numbers more than 3,000 and represents a wide range of abilities and interests.

It should be noted that all Bedford residents are eligible for assistance and coordination with elder services from the Council on Aging— for themselves and for their family members.
