Fire Chief Davic Grunes and Police Chief Robert Bongiorno are alerting residents to the possible dangers from fireworks and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) or “Macgyver” bombs, often created using discarded plastic bottles.

“Each summer we typically respond to approximately a half-dozen calls where a IED was created and detonated and/or an IED or illegal firework was utilized to damage personal property.“ Chief Grunes wrote in an email to The Bedford Citizen.

Detonation of these devices can result in serious injury to fingers or limbs and may cause burns, according to a joint press release from the Fire and Police departments. The devices are often found where teenagers congregate, but residents should contact the police regarding any unexplained explosions or suspicious containers.
