State Representative David Linsky (D-Natick), who has proposed legislation to reduce gun violence, will be joined by Bedford/Burlington Representative Ken Gordon and Bedford Police Chief Robert Bongiorno in a public forum moderated by Rev. John Gibbons on Monday evening, June 10 at 7:00 p.m. at First Parish, 75 The Great Road on the Bedford Town Common.

The forum is co-sponsored by the Violence Prevention Coalition and the Bedford Department of Youth and Family Services.

Rep. Linsky has proposed House Bill 3253, “An Act to reduce gun violence and to protect the citizens of the Commonwealth,” that would tighten Massachusetts gun laws, including greater discretion for police chiefs in issuing gun licenses, stricter storage of assault weapons, more gun safety training, gun liability insurance, and other protections. Referred to the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security, it is expected that hearings will be scheduled soon.

Massachusetts gun laws already address the spectrum of assault weapons, high capacity magazines and background checks. Rep. Linsky is an opportunist playing off the Newtown tragedy. His proposal would further burden law abiding citizens who assert their second amendment rights. I am distressed that Rep. Gordon, who I support, would consider this ill advised and extremist measure. One would think that Bedford’s several thousand gun owners were running a muck in the streets. Can anyone recall the last murder in town? That the police chief would seek more discretionary power to unilaterally determine which law abiding citizen can license a firearm just speaks volumes to our current era of eroding civil liberties. Please focus our limited law enforcement resources on more productive areas of public safety.

Linsky should concentrate and put more of an effort on the illegal aliens in the commonwealth, the EBT abuse and fraud, and the requirement to have a SS number. It appears Mr. Linsky has his sights aimed at the lawful citizens that choose to have an FID or LTC which both have a photo ID and finger print on it for identification. Don’t go after the law abiding citiznes, go after the repeat offenders.

Unfortunately Linsky’s bill is directed at law abiding Mass. licensed firearms owners who are not the problem and are not committing firearm crimes or supplying firearms to criminals. Hidden in the language of his bill are extreme measures that would punish and put a severe financial hardship on the wrong people. He even goes to the extreme of banning human silhouette targets at gun clubs except by police but fails to address a major cause of violence such as violent video games and violent movies. The proposed bill basically violates the civil rights of law abiding Mass. residents while failing to accomplish anything that would reduce crime.
