Emerson Hospital recently held its annual Volunteer Awards and Appreciation Luncheon recognizing local community members for their donations of 100 to 11,000 hours for the benefit of staff, patients and their families.

Awards were presented to a pair of Bedford residents:  4,000-hour honoree Cecelia Miranda at front reception; 3,000-hour honoree Alberta Genetti in the Nursery.

“We are very appreciative to our volunteers for their many hours, years and even decades of service,” said Janet Davis, director of community services at Emerson Hospital. “Each one makes a tremendous difference in the comfort and care of our patients.”

Christine Schuster, president and CEO of Emerson, joined in praising all the volunteers for sharing their time and talent. “I am so pleased to be here with you to recognize your accomplishments and thank you for all that you do for Emerson Hospital and our patients,” she said, noting that volunteers also contribute to the hospital-wide mission of preventing infection and the spread of germs. “Our volunteers are right there with us, doing their very best to make a visit to Emerson Hospital a pleasant and stress-free experience.”

In all, Emerson volunteers in 2012 provided 70,900 patient transportations; visited 3,693 patients; assisted patients and family members in the Emergency Department over 1,455 hours; dedicated 3,645 hours to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, Same Day Care and Endoscopy; contributed 2,077 hours to supporting nursing units, the Transitional Care Unit and Cardiac Rehab; greeted patients and visitors in the reception area over 7,442 hours; donated 1,607 hours in the hospital library; gave 1,331 hours through the Community Services department; raised more than $125,000 through gift shop sales benefiting the hospital; and administered integrated therapies of Reiki, hand massage, music therapy and pet therapy for 1,563 hours.
