More than 650 community members, representing 50 teams, are expected to participate in Bedford’s 8th annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life at Sabourin Field, beginning at 3 pm today, Saturday, June 1.  Relay will conclude at 6 am on Sunday, June 2. Organizers hope to raise $57,000 for the American Cancer Society.

The Relay is held overnight and its goal for at least one member of each team to be on the track at all times.

There are several traditional highlights at Relay for Life:

  • The Cancer Survivors’ Lap will begin at 3:15 on Saturday and feature 25 survivors and their caregivers making a victory lap around the track.
  • The Fight Back ceremony at 6 pm offers participants the opportunity to recognize their commitment to fight cancer year round.
  • Another Relay highlight, the Luminaria Ceremony where 750 candles will be lit to honor those lost to cancer, to honor those who have fought cancer in the past, and in support of those whose fight continues will begin at 9 pm.

Bedford is also one of few enrollment sites for the American Cancer Society’s longitudinal Cancer Prevention Study, CPS-3.
