Several Bedford churches will take part in the Bedford Bicycle Committee’s annual Bike to Church program on Sunday, April 21, in celebration of Earth Day which takes place the next day. More than 15 major religious denominations support the Bike to Church program.

First Church of Christ, Congregational, invites its members to “Celebrate the Earth and all its creatures” at their 10am worship service. “Through words, prayer, images, and music we will celebrate the wonder of God’s creation and rededicate ourselves to its care.  As part of the Ride or Walk Sunday in Bedford, we encourage all who can to ride their bike or walk to church.  If you come from too great a distance to ride or walk – bring your bike or your favorite walking shoes anyway.

“If you use assistance to get around – bring/come with your canes, walkers, wheel chairs, etc.  During worship we will bless our bikes, our walking shoes, and the other equipment that we use to get around the earth in creation friendly ways.

“Our worship this Sunday is part of the 50 day commitment to the environment in which First Church is involved. Called Mission 4/1 Earth: 50 Great Days, this effort brings together thousands of United Church of Christ churches and related organizations on a shared resurrection witness for our Earth by celebrating and paying attention to the amazing gift of our wonderful earth, and by greening up, powering down and shouting out for the environment! Children will have an important role in our service on Sunday, but we will also have childcare for those who are pre-K and younger.”

Other Bedford churches participating in Bike to Church Sunday on April 21 include:

  • First Parish Unitarian Universalist on Bedford Common suggests “You can show your support for reducing carbon footprints by riding a bike to church, walking to church, or car pooling (or use your magic carpet).” Services at First Parish this week will take place at 9 and 11 am.
  • St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Pine Hill Road’s newsletter encourages its congregants to “Tune up your bike, and hop on” to get to Sunday’s service of Holy Eucharist at 10 am, with Sunday School and nursery care beginning at 9:45.
  • First Baptist Church on Concord Road tells The Citizen that at least one member of their congregation will bike to the 10:30 am service on Sunday.
