On Monday night, the Selectmen signed the necessary paperwork allowing a proposal for a Massachusetts Preservation Projects Fund grant to be submitted that would fund a phase of renovation work at the depot station building at 80 Loomis Street. If successful, the grant would be awarded this summer, according to Facilities Director Richard Jones, and work would begin in earnest in September.
“I’ve been working with the Depot Park Advisory Committee and the Historical Preservation Commission to submit [this grant],” Jones said. “We’ve developed a plan to do some exterior restoration of the [depot] building, consistent with what the Selectmen directed us to do.”
The scope of the project includes renovations to the front entryway, an accessibility ramp on the left side of the building, and renovations to part of the rear of the structure which Jones said is consistent with the plan that was developed for the depot several years ago.
I think it’s exciting,” said Selectman Bill Moonan.
“We’ve been waiting for it a long time,” agreed Chair Cathy Cordes.
“It’s even more exciting to do it with grant money,” added Jones. “We’re applying for $100,000 and we have some matching money of another $100,000. I really want it done by June 30, 2014. Once it starts, it will go relatively quickly.”
