At Tuesday’s School Committee meeting, Anne Bickford—currently serving as Chair—announced her decision to step down in March 2013.
“I want to share that I will not be running for another term,” Bickford said. “I will not be putting my name in at the January caucus. I want to get this out publicly so that people who might be out there watching [on Bedford TV] could see what fun they could have joining everyone here at the table.”
Colleague Ed Pierce responded to Bickford’s announcement saying, “I know you don’t want any public comments, Anne, but you will be missed. It’s been a privilege to serve with you…”
Pierce also noted—with relief— that Bickford will serve on the Committee through the FY14 budget process, almost until this spring’s Town Meeting.
Bickford’s contributions to the Schools and to the community are vast but she is perhaps best recognized for her fierce advocacy for excellence in education and for her facility with numbers and budgets. With many lean years among the twelve of her service, Bickford’s analytical thinking and skill in making sense of figures has helped to keep Bedford’s schools strong.
Below is an excerpt from the District’s web page that contains biographical information about Bedford’s School Committee members:
“Anne was elected to her first term on the School Committee in March 2001. She is currently serving her third time as Chairman. She is also serving as a School Committee liaison to the Finance Committee, Fiscal Planning and Coordinating Committee, and as a member of the Strategic Communications Task Force that is seeking ways to increase the funding Bedford receives for the education of military students. She has served previously as the liaison to the Capital Expenditures Committee, Youth and Family Services Committee, BHS Graduation Requirements Committee and was a member of the first School’s Strategic Planning Committee. Prior to her election to the School Committee, Anne served on the School’s Transportation Safety Committee, and assisted the School Committee in rewriting the contract and procurement specifications for the School’s Bus System. In addition, she served on the Superintendent’s Gifted/Talented Task Force (1997/98), as the FINCOM observer for BEST/PTO (1997 – 2000) and served for two years on the John Glenn Middle School’s Advisory Council (1999/00 and 2000/01.)”
