What was once a dream became a reality on a Saturday in mid-November, when the eighth and final house in Bedford’s Habitat for Humanity project held its dedication.

Members of Habitat’s staff and board spoke eloquently about the support Habitat received from Bedford’s various boards, from many of Bedford’s churches, and from Bedford residents who put in hours of time to make it possible for eight new families to call Bedford home.

Selectman Cathy Cordes, who spoke on behalf of the Town, reminded everyone of the history of Bedford’s interest in a Habitat project, beginning with the Affordable Housing Trust. The Selectmen supported the project from its inception, and Bedford’s Community Preservation Committee approved funding for the land purchase for what would become Carter Way.

With musical interludes from members of Bedford High School’s marching band, about 30 people gathered in front of the final house to offer congratulations to Habitat, to the Durfee family and to everyone in Bedford who helped make this new neighborhood a reality.

More than 4,700 hours volunteer hours went into the whole project, which had corporate support from Re/MAX Prestige Realty.

The dedication prayer was offered by Deacon Guy St. Sauveur from The Parish of St. Michael in Bedford,  and a prayer of dedication and blessing was given by Rabbi Susan Abramson of Temple Shalom Emeth.

What was once a ramshackle farmhouse, a falling down barn, and acres of unused land is now a new addition to the community of Bedford, and everyone at the dedication offered heartfelt welcome.
