6th Harvest Festival, Saturday, October 13, Benefits Emerson Hospital Pediatric Unit at Verrill Farm

Submitted by Emerson Hospital and Verrill Farm

Verrill Farm will host its sixth annual Harvest Festival to benefit Emerson Hospital pediatric care on Saturday, Oct. 13 from noon to 4 p.m. (rain or shine) at 11 Wheeler Road in Concord.

Proceeds will benefit coping kits, which are colorful bags of therapeutic toys distributed by Emerson’s pediatric intervention team to children who enter the hospital through the emergency department or upon admission to the pediatric unit. Wilma Johnson of Bedford coordinates the team that makes the teddy bears that are included in many of the kits.

The Harvest Festival will feature games and activities for children of all ages, including pumpkin picking, hay and pony rides, face-painting, balloon animals, a raffle, live music by Boston Road Bluegrass, entertainment by Violet the Clown and refreshments. Activity, game and raffle tickets are five for $10 and 12 for $20.

Since the coping kits program was piloted in November 2005, more than 20,000 kits have been distributed to pediatric patients. Color-coded for age and gender, they are designed with an understanding of the developmental needs of children and the stressors encountered by a child entering a medical environment, including fear of separation, fear of pain, intimidating surroundings and loss of control and privacy.

Grant proposal deadline is Monday, October 15
Submitted by Bedford Cultural Council

The Bedford Cultural Council has set an October 15 postmark deadline for organizations, schools and individuals to apply for grants that support cultural activities in the community. Proposals for community-oriented arts, humanities, and science programs are invited.

According to Council spokesperson Ken Gordon, these grants can support a variety of artistic projects and activities in Bedford — including exhibits, festivals, field trips, short-term artist residencies or performances in schools, workshops and lectures.

The Bedford Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year. The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each community.

This year, the Bedford Cultural Council will distribute about $3,800 in grants. Previously funded projects include: art supplies for the pre-schoolers with the Bedford Family Connection, material for a science project for the Bedford 4-H club, a one-man show for the Council on Aging, gardens at the Veterans Administration Hospital, a video project involving the effect of regional food influences of people from different countries who have moved to Bedford, and more.

For specific guidelines and complete information on the Bedford Cultural Council, contact Ken Gordon at (617) 909-0106 or at [email protected]. Application forms and more information about the Local Cultural Council Program are available online at www.mass-culture.org/lcc_public.asp. Application forms are also available at the Bedford Public Library.

If your organization has news to share, send it to [email protected]. We request that you limit your press release to 300 words.
