Coach Belcher teams with the Bedford Football Club to Tackle Cancer at Friday night’s varsity game against Waltham
Submitted by Sheila Albrecht

Pink shirts at the October 5 varsity football game

More than one hundred student fans were decked out in pink Bedford Buccaneers t-shirts in support of the Coaches for Cancer program promoted by Bedford High School’s Head Coach Jack Belcher during the October 5 at-home varsity football game at Sabourin Field. Coaches for Cancer is a nationwide program, that partners NFL, college and high school coaches with the American Cancer Society to raise funds for cancer research.

In honor of the October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Coach Belcher and the Bedford Football Club (“Bedford High Booster Club”) gave away free pink Bedford Buccaneer cancer awareness t-shirts to the first 100 students who purchased tickets to the game. And in line with other Coaches for Cancer programs, the Bedford High football team wore bright pink socks with their uniforms in their 41-40 win against Somerville.

The sea of pink t-shirts had an energizing effect on the fundraiser and Laura Zampell, Darlene Simmons and Debbie Ricci, all officers of the Booster Club, collected almost $500 in donations.

Due to the overwhelming response of last Friday’s activities and a request by students and community members to repeat the fundraiser, Coach Belcher and his partners will be again be offering free pink t-shirts at this Friday’s home game against Waltham on Friday, October 12.  The fundraising goal is $1000, and everyone’s participation is requested.

Please look for the Bedford Football Club Booth at the entrance to Sabourin Field and support the fundraiser!
