Council on Aging Newsletter July 2024

July 1, 2024

Submitted by Alison Cservenschi, Bedford COA Director

We have reached the middle of the year and I wish you the best for the long-awaited season ahead. A reminder that this month’s COA Connections newsletter holds both July and August programs and events, a double edition, and sign-ups will be taken for any August events on Thursday, August 1. We will be closed this year for the July holiday on both Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5. We will be open on Saturday, July 6 with our usual programs and if you have a July birthday come on over on July 5 and celebrate with us!

I would like to introduce our new Saturday Coordinator, Gina, who along with Leslie and volunteers Kai, Marc, Michael, and Francesca, is here to welcome you each Saturday. Take a break from the heat in our fully air-conditioned space. You are welcome to attend our programs, read a book, have a coffee and a snack, use the computer, play pool, take an exercise class, have lunch, or learn something new. We have a full calendar of programs for you to enjoy this summer and I hope you take advantage of them.

I would also like to introduce you to Bedford’s new Public Health Nurse, Jackie. We are very excited to welcome Jackie to the COA. She will be bringing back our regular, popular blood pressure clinics and educational programs that have been missed. The COA enjoys a close relationship with our colleagues in the Health and Human Services Department and we know Jackie will be a great fit. Come and meet Jackie for her introductory presentation on July 8 at 1:30 p.m.

On July 15 you will also be able to meet and ask questions of the Town’s first Energy and Sustainability Manager, Andres Correa. He will share his work and goals with us now and for the future. I hope you will consider joining us to learn how we can all be a little greener and contribute to a better future.

Wednesday, August 21 is National Senior Citizen Day where we celebrate wonderful YOU. We are asking for your graduation, year book, or prom photo for our special event! Bring back memories, share the styles and fashions of your youth, and celebrate this year’s theme of ‘Age is Just a Number’ with us.

Other programs of note include the return of the Delvena Theatre Company, Ben Couvee, our pizza party, in-person gentle flow yoga, another LGBTQIA+ event in August and Lets Paint! We are also featuring a quarterly Volunteer Spotlight in this newsletter. Check out Charlie and Joyce along with their wonderful contributions. In June we thanked our 107 wonderful volunteers at the Great Wall restaurant. This year our volunteers gave over 7000 hours of service to the town in various areas. I am very grateful for each and every one of them and the difference they make every day.

On closing, thank you for your attendance, readership, and making our COA a success. I wish you a safe and happy summer and I hope to see you soon.
