The phrase the Dog Days of Summer derives from ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian times. The rise of Sirius, the Dog Star, the brightest star in the night sky, coincides with the hottest times of the year in the Northern Hemisphere (around July 3 – August 11). At least that’s what the Farmer’s Almanac and other sources across the internet say.
This year we say the Dog Days of Summer is a time to appreciate some of the beloved canines in our neighborhoods and across Bedford. And that time starts now, or rather last week, when we started collecting entries for The Bedford Citizen Best in Show contest. And it ends whenever we get through voting.
So far we have over 70 entries ready to compete for nothing but the honor of being known as The Bedford Citizen Best in Show for 2024. There are mutts and tricksters, young puppies and gray muzzles, a groups of dog buddies who romp together in Clark field, big dogs and small dogs, lazy dogs and jumpy dogs, and a dog that really likes to carry two small tennis balls everywhere. P.D. Eastman (author of “Go, Dog, Go”) would be proud of our assembled pack.
Today the voting begins with a dozen head-to-head competitions in Group A of Round 1. We’re trying a Google Form for voting and leaving it open for one week.
