The Massachusetts American Legion Posts throughout the state sponsor a camporee every Father’s Day weekend. This year marked the 51st American Legion-sponsored camporee.

Sixty-nine proud and exhausted Scouts, Webelos, parents/guardians, and guests from Bedford’s Troop 194 participated.

Everyone says that Greg Mattson did a great job as Troop 194’s trip leader. On the camporee side of things, Jon (OC) O’Connor, Peter Ricci, Abby Thibodeau, and staff did a spectacular job. Special guests in attendance included: Phillis King, Kaye Cousens, Eagle Scout Allan Coady, and Eagle Scout Quinn Ricci.

The weekend program consists of a series of events that are designed to provide a competitive arena in which the boys demonstrate their skills in Scout-craft, teamwork, and Scout Spirit. All of this and fun at the same time combined to deliver a memorable weekend for all who were there. Seventeen Scout troops and one pack from all over the Commonwealth participated this year.

In all, 250 scouts/adults/guests participated. In addition to the competition, there was a church service, a flag retirement ceremony, and a Saturday night campfire that was run entirely by the Senior Scouts. Another highlight was the Saturday night feast served up by Bill Sayles, Louis Trebaol, and their staff. WOW was it good. It was an amazing and delicious meal.

Honored guests during the weekend included the U.S. Marines, the Massachusetts State Police Air (Helo) wing, Massachusetts State Police STOP team, Massachusetts State Police dive team, Middlesex County Sheriff, Massachusetts Environmental Police, FEMA, and the CERT organization.

The Marines, led by Staff Sgt. Brian Clay of Bedford, brought various weapons and a five-ton truck. Scouts discovered that running while wearing a flak jacket and helmet is hard to do. The State Police came in and landed one of their helicopters.

Troop 194 placed first in the Giant Jenga event, third in the Kim’s game, second in the Trivia competition, first in Mouse Trap Fishing, third in Corn Hole Toss, third in the Giant Frisbee Toss, and first in the Tripod Race.

Representing Troop 194 at this year’s camporee were the Kung Fu Ducks and Conspiracy Theory Patrol and the Fluorescent Lightbulbs Patrol.

The Kung Fu Ducks was the second-best patrol at the camporee. They came in first place in the Tomahawk toss event as well as second in the Flag Etiquette and Fire Building events. They also placed fourth in the First Aid event and on the obstacle course.

The Conspiracy Theory Patrol took first place in the First Aid event and in the Flag Etiquette event as well as second place in the Dutch oven cooking competition. They also came in fourth in the Identify Animal Tracks event.

Richie Zaloom and Theo Mattson came in second and third at rifle range overall. Cub Pack 194 was the best Cub Pack at the camporee.

Troop 194 had the fourth best Gateway and the fourth best campsite. This year, Troop 194 was the second-best troop at the camporee.

Through the years, Troop 194 has won the commander’s trophy 13 times. Also of note, many fish were caught.

The Troop 194 Committee extends their heartfelt thanks to long-time sponsors and friend – the Anthony Hunt Hamilton American Legion Post 221. In addition, they thank all of the participants; especially the adults whose investment of time and energy throughout the year are key to providing these Scouts with the skills, opportunities, and personal examples necessary to enhance the fundamental scouting experience.
