Many Bedford residents may be wondering what to do about regular book donations to the Friends of the Library during the long-awaited HVAC work in the building when the usual collection spaces will not be available.

The Friends will host a donation event from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 30 in the Library Meeting Room. Children’s books are especially needed, according to Friends Co-President Sue Rogalski, so if you’re at last ready to part with the “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” or your “Dr. Seuss” collection, now is the time.

Donations are especially needed as the Friends prepare for a summer book sale scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 15 that will be part indoor sale and part sidewalk sale. This also coincides with the Bedford Cultural District’s Music and Arts Festival on the same day.

The Friends welcome:

  • Books for adults and children only in good condition
  • Puzzles and games
  • Textbooks – no more than five years old
  • CDs and DVDs in good condition

They ask that you do not leave:

  • Damaged books (moldy, torn, etc.)
  • Magazines or encyclopedias
  • Outdated travel or computer books
  • VHS tapes, cassettes, or vinyl records

The Friends of the Library, through their regular sales of donated books, fund many programs for the Bedford Public Library that might not be possible within the municipal budget. Some of the most popular include the Library of Things, Summer Reading Programs for kids and Adults, and passes to area museums, to name a few.
