Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Spring 2020 semester, Middlesex Community College has been creative in offering online courses, programs and events. This includes MCC’s “A World of Music” concerts run by the Music department, who will close out the Spring 2021 series with a performance by the Lowell Chamber Orchestra.
“I am incredibly proud of the creativity of the Music department in providing the ‘World of Music’ concert series,” said Mathew Olson, MCC’s Dean of Liberal Arts. “For many in our Middlesex community, the concerts are some of the only bright spots in the midst of the pandemic. Department Chair Carmen Peralta develops programs that are extremely interesting, featuring highly talented musicians – many on our teaching faculty – performing diverse and entertaining pieces of music.”
Entitled “On the Double,” the concert will air at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 15. The performance will feature masterpieces for double string orchestra – groups split, mirror and separate. Works will include Dirge-Fantasy by Jeremy Gill, Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, and Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta by Bela Bartok.
An MCC Student Recital will air at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 7 – featuring a compilation of student singers, pianists, guitarists, cellists and the MCC World Drumming Ensemble.
Previous performances throughout the Spring 2021 semester have included “Celebrating Black Composers from Europe, Africa, United States and South America” from MCC faculty members, a concert by The Rasa Strings Quartet, and another concert by the Lowell Chamber Orchestra entitled “Miniature Universes.”
