Friday Night Service and Event
January 22, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
FreeTemple Shalom Emeth of Burlington is hosting a special Friday night service on Feb. 2 to highlight U.S. immigration policy, and specifically DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), and the Dreamers, who face possible deportation.
Guest speaker will be Eva Millona, executive director of MIRA (Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition), who will discuss the current status of DACA, and its repercussions. She will also outline ways citizens can help Dreamers face the uncertainties of today and plan for the future.
The service, sponsored by the temple’s Social Justice Committee, will include passages from the temple prayer book that reflect the committee’s commitment to working with and helping others.
For example, a prayer for the Sabbath includes: “Standing on the parted shores of history, we still believe …that wherever we go, there is a better place, … that there is no way to get from here to there except by joining hands, marching together.”
Also, “…Let peace and friendship be our shelter from life’s storms. … Help us … to live with hope in our hearts… .”
The evening is also co-sponsored by the temple’s band.
The temple’s Social Justice Committee chose the plight of the Dreamers as part of its mission when the committee was established a year ago. The members believe that the Dreamers’ fight “is our fight.”
DACA was established to protect eligible immigrant youth who came to the United States with their parents when they were children from deportation. The current White House administration is seeking to end that policy, causing an estimated 122 Dreamers a day to lose their DACA status, lose their jobs, and be exposed to arrest and deportation. Groups like MIRA are working to help Dreamers stay in this country.
Information about DACA and other immigrant issues will be available at the service, and refreshments will be served.
If you can attend, please RSVP to [email protected].
The event, which is open to the public, begins at 7:30 p.m. at the temple, 16 Lexington St., Burlington
