Community Challah Bake
May 19, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
The community is invited to First Parish at 1 pm on Sunday, May 19, as we join together as one united Bedford community to learn the Jewish art of baking challah.
Challah is the special bread that Jews eat on Shabbat, the Jewish Sabbath which begins Friday evenings and ends at sundown on Saturdays. This will be a unique opportunity for all to join together and participate in this fun and tasty Jewish ritual with Rabbi Susan Abramson, rabbi of Temple Shalom Emeth in Burlington, author of Challah: A Chewish Guide to the Torah. Rabbi Abramson’s books also will be for sale.
As everyone makes their own, personal loaf to be taken home and baked, Rabbi Abramson will explain this tradition and its significance in Jewish life. Her sous chefs will be John Gibbons and Bedford Town Manager Sarah Stanton.
If you’d like to participate, please RSVP by Wednesday, May 15, by emailing First Parish administrator Joan Petros, at [email protected].
You’re asked to bring four things ~ All other ingredients will be provided
- one or more large mixing bowls
- a large spoon
- a large baking (cookie) sheet, and
- a kitchen towel.
This is a fun thing for families to do together. We’ll start at 1pm and be done no later than 3pm so you can take your challah home to bake.
AND, First Parish needs some help in organizing this – two or three people to help organize so that there are eggs, yeast, flour….etc.
We’ll get together ahead of time and see what’s needed. If you’re willing to help, contact John Gibbons directly and we’ll set up a time to get together: [email protected].
Thank you.
