BCA Photo Group Presents: Good Portraits: Demystifying Flash – The Basics

January 25, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

On Tuesday, January 25 at 7 PM Bedford Center for the Arts Photo Group will host Mike Milicia with a virtual presentation entitled “Good Portraits:  Demystifying Flash – The Basics”.

The use of flash can enable quality results in a much wider variety of lighting conditions and can also allow the capture of images that are simply not possible without flash.  In spite of this, it remains one of the least understood tools available to the photographer.  The goal of this talk is to teach several of the key underlying concepts that are critical to understanding how to use flash effectively.  Topics will include the inverse square law, camera sync speed, front vs. rear sync, high-speed sync, the relationship between flash and ambient exposure, flash zoom, manual vs. automatic flash, and flash exposure compensation.

Mike Milicia began his professional photography career in 2005 after working 27 years as a Software Engineer.  In 2011, he started offering classes and workshops and became affiliated with Shoot The Light Instructional Photographic Workshops, which is owned and operated by Canon Explorer of Light, Charles Glatzer.  Mike’s images have earned high honors in the North American Nature Photography Association’s Annual Showcase Competition and in the Audubon Magazine Photography Awards.  His work has been published in National Geographic, Audubon, Outdoor Photographer, Nature’s Best, and National Wildlife magazines, and is available for licensing through Birdimagency and Minden Pictures.  He has also authored three articles for the National Audubon Society’s web site and served as the Technical Editor for Marie Read’s “Mastering Bird Photography” book.

Mike has two main passions: bird photography and teaching.  His technical background makes him especially adept at communicating complex subjects in a well-organized, step-by-step manner that proves to be very effective for photography students at all levels.
