In 2021, Former Governor Charlie Baker created a Special Commission to review and recommend changes to the Massachusetts state seal and motto. The State Seal Commission has received multiple deadline extensions, most recently to Nov. 15, 2023, and last fall the Legislature awarded it a $100,000 budget.
The current 18th century seal portrays an Indigenous person on a shield below a crest that features an arm holding a sword, which advocates have long said represents violence and oppression toward the Indigenous population. This committee is moving very slowly and has just launched a survey asking for the public to weigh in.

So what’s Bedford thinking about the state seal redo?

The Massachusetts seal should be the Red Sox logo and our motto should be: “Wait’ll next year!”
