Town Manager Qualities Focus of Public Forum on Monday

June 1, 2023

The Select Board has scheduled a “community forum” to learn residents’ “thoughts on the preferred skills and experience they believe Bedford’s next Town Manager should possess.”

The session is planned for Monday at 7 p.m. in the Reed Room at Town Hall.

“It is important that Bedford’s residents are an integral part of the town manager selection process,” said Bopha Malone, Select Board chair.

Residents unable to join the community forum may share thoughts by email to: [email protected] (Bedford TM on the subject line). An online survey is also available, accessed via www.bedfordma.gov/TMsearch.

The search is in response to the departure of Sarah Stanton, who began her new position as a senior leader in the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development in late April. Stanton told the board of her plans during an executive session on March 13.

Malone has said she hopes the successor is in place by Sept. 11. Colleen Doyle, Assistant Town Manager for Human Resources and Administration, is serving as acting town manager, and has not applied for the position.

The town has hired the consulting firm Community Paradigm Associates, LLC, to assist in the search process. Representatives from the firm, including Bernard Lynch, principal, will attend the community forum. Lynch had a long career in municipal management, including 20 years as Chelmsford town manager.

Community Paradigm is advising a seven-member screening committee, including five at-large members, who will recommend three or four finalists to the Select Board for public interviews later in the summer.
