The Bedford High School Buccaneers will return to Miss G Field for the second round of the MIAA Division 2 state softball tournament at 4 p.m. on Thursday, thanks to a major upset on Tuesday.
Coach Dennis Walsh’s Bucs will host Holliston High School with the winner reaching the elite eight.
Holliston, ranked 27th, needed a play-in game to even compete in the opening round, and the Panthers throttled Holyoke, 18-0.
Then they traveled to sixth-ranked Walpole, with a record of 17-1, and won convincingly, 10-4, to even their record at 11 wins, 11 losses. Holliston competes in the Tri-Valley League.
The Bucs, now 15-4, were ranked 11th at the end of the season and hosted 22nd-ranked Westborough on Monday. Bedford was victorious 4-1, and never trailed, but the game was close until the final out.
More BHA Playoff Teams
Both BHS lacrosse teams meet highly-ranked opponents on the road on Thursday. The boys visit fourth-ranked Grafton and the girls travel to third-seeded Duxbury.
The boys tennis team, already in the state Division 3 quarterfinals, is awaiting word on its next match, which will be on the BHS courts, weather permitting.
