Multigenerational Living – What’s Bedford Thinking?

June 2, 2023

Affordable housing is a big topic throughout the country as well as here in Bedford.  There are various programs and ideas on how a community might be able to make housing more affordable.  One movement that has been quietly taking place is a return to an old idea, multigenerational housing.  The trend has two components: seniors living with their adult kids is often a win-win for all, both in terms of affordability as well as caregiving and companionship. Also trending is the return of adult children who are returning to their parents’ home after they finish college due to the high cost of housing.

As I said this is an old idea-think back to the Waltons TV show. For much of the country’s history, these multigenerational living arrangements were the norm. A recent Pew Research Center Study says that since 1971 multigenerational living arrangements have quadrupled.

So what’s Bedford Thinking?  Are you living in a multigenerational home? For the purpose of this poll, we will define a multigenerational home as kids over 25 living at home, or grandparents living under the same roof as their adult children.

Multi-gen and multi-friend families are absolutely the future, considering what the housing and commuting situation will continue to be. Not to mention the economics facing younger people. The town should recognize and allow for this.
