An Obituary: David J. Meaney

June 5, 2023

David J. Meaney, 90, of Bedford and formerly of Somerville, died on May 14, 2023.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1932 and raised in Somerville. He was the son of the late John L. and Catherine M. (McNamara) Meaney.

David J. Meaney

He was a graduate of Somerville High School. In 1953, he enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict until 1955 when he was honorably discharged. He was in the Army Reserves until 1960.

For many years, he worked as an assistant to Massachusetts State Representative Marie Howe. He held a number of jobs at various companies over the years, including at the J.L. Hammett School Supply Warehouse in Braintree and at his own courier service.

He was very involved in the American Legion Post 388 and coordinated many events there.

During his free time, he collected baseball cards and stamps and enjoyed organizing his collections to keep his mind sharp. He loved telling jokes and reciting both historical poems and The Gettysburg Address. He astonished all as he was able to have people “think of a number,” walk them through a math equation, and tell them the number they were thinking of.  He accurately predicted the number every time.

He was predeceased by his wife, Bettina “Betty” (Schmitt) Meaney in 2014 and his siblings, John, Eugene and Thomas Meaney, Catherine Lemos and Francis Meaney. He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Paul Meaney, Linda Bird, Jane O’Brien, Maureen Daley, Michael Saganey, Sharon Harriman, Thomas Meaney, Stephen Meaney and Maribeth Darrow.

Funeral services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the VA Bedford Healthcare System, CDCE 135, 200 Springs Rd., Bedford, MA 01730.
