Two Non-Voting Members to Join School Committee

April 28, 2023

The Bedford School Committee on Tuesday approved School Superintendent Philip Conrad’s choices for non-voting members from two special constituencies.

The committee approved the appointments of Peterann Williams representing METCO families and Kim Howell for military households on and off Hanscom Air Force Base.

Both were named for two-year terms and are expected to start at the committee’s next meeting May 9. “Both of them are excited to join you,” Conrad said.

Since 1966, METCO has embraced the mission of providing Boston students opportunities to experience education in the suburbs, while also decreasing racial isolation and increasing diversity in those areas. This is Bedford’s 49th year as a METCO participating district.

Bedford is unique as the only high school in New England with a significant student population of military dependents.

Conrad said Williams has four children, three of whom are in the Bedford schools, the oldest a high school senior.

Conrad said Howell is the parent of a senior and an eighth grader, as well as of former Bedford students.

Committee member Sarah McGinley said she is “delighted that they’re both willing to do this.” McGinley was elected to the School Committee in March after serving as the first non-voting representative of military families.
