The Bedford Public Schools’ director of athletics has been recognized by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association with the 2023 State Award of Merit.

Keith Mangan accepted the award during the recent state conference of the Massachusetts Secondary Schools Athletic Directors Association.

The award recognizes an athletic administrator from each state for “meritorious dedication to high school and middle school athletics.”

Mangan, who has been director since July 2008, also heads physical education, health, and FAMCO (family and consumer science) for the Bedford Public Schools.

He has been active in the district, state, and national athletic directors associations, including as president, vice president, and treasurer of the Massachusetts unit.

Bedford High School Principal Heather Galante said the recognition is well-deserved. “Keith’s constant presence at and advocacy of our athletic programs is seen and felt by our school community,” she said, adding that he “champions our student-athletes and strives to provide positive experiences that are centered around growth and teamwork. He has built strong relationships with students, coaches, and families.”

Mangan earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Springfield College and completed his certification in athletic administration through the NIAAA.
