More than 30 years ago, the comedian George Carlin, in a memorable routine contrasting baseball and football, declared, “Baseball has no time limit. We don’t know when it’s gonna end.”
That translates to never-give-up, and was celebrated by the Bedford High School softball team Monday with an 11-10 walk-off victory over Newton South at Miss G Field.
The Bucs trailed 10-6 after six-and-a-half innings. But softball, like baseball, has no time limit. And indeed, the team exploded for five runs, including Mia Vitti’s two-out, two-RBI singles to win it.
“It was a total team effort and an epic five-run, two-out rally,” said Coach Dennis Walsh.
Coco Steele picked up the win in relief, striking out three in an inning and two-thirds. Seventeen of her 21 pitches were strikes. The other big seventh-inning blast was a two-run bomb by freshman Lexie Masters, her third hit of the game. Kaylee Grace and Lulu Steele each collected two hits before the decisive inning.
