Two Catalytic Converters Reported Stolen within an Hour

Bedford police received two calls reporting catalytic converter thefts from cars parked at Crosby Drive businesses within a 45-minute window between 10 and 11 a.m. on Friday.

A catalytic converter is an exhaust emission device that modifies internal combustion gases into less toxic pollutants. Thieves target the part because it contains precious metals.

Police Detective Lt. Scott Jones said there is no foolproof way to thwart a converter theft short of buying an electric car.

“Some dealerships and auto shops are offering various protective or hardened casings, but I’m not sure if they are practical or available for all vehicles,” he said.

“If people see anyone suspicious, they are encouraged to call police,” Jones said. “That area of town will see more attention from our patrols.”
