Planning Board Proceeds with Drafting Zoning Bylaw Reorganization

March 8, 2023

The Bedford Planning Board last week gave its consultant the go-ahead to pursue a draft reorganizing the zoning bylaw.

Board members responded favorably to recommendations by Judi Barrett and Robert Mitchell, representatives of Barrett Planning Group of Hingham.

Barrett began by explaining her team’s efforts to create a more resident-friendly version of the bylaws. She recommended placing the administrative and enforcement section in the beginning as these are topics that will be frequently viewed but less likely to be subject to change.

Board member Amy Lloyd commended Barrett’s inclusion of both the Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals in the bylaws. She also expressed enthusiasm for the clarity of the new organizational structure and was particularly impressed by the placement of a definitions section at the end of the bylaws.

Members Steven Hagan, Chris Gittins, and Jacinda Barbehenn agreed with Lloyd’s assertion that the proposed draft would be clearer and more user friendly than the current version.

The board agreed with Barrett and Mitchell’s proposal to move forward with creating a revised draft of the bylaws that would then be submitted to the board for review.
