Bopha Malone’s inspirational American story started another chapter on Monday night when she was elected by her colleagues to serve as chair of the Bedford Select Board for the next year.
Malone was re-elected to her second three-year term on the board on Saturday. Board reorganization traditionally occurs immediately following the Town Election.
The new chair arrived in the United States more than 30 years ago with her parents, refugees from persecution in Cambodia.
On Monday, Malone praised Emily Mitchell, her predecessor as chair. “I have very big shoes to fill,” she said, thanking Mitchell for “leading our board as we emerged from the pandemic. Your leadership and commitment are incredible.”
Board member Shawn Hanegan was unanimously elected clerk.
This was also the first meeting for newly elected Select Board member Paul Mortenson. He comes to this board after previously serving as the chair of the Finance Committee. He also served as a selectman when he lived in Foxborough.
