Letter to the Editor:  An Appreciation of Barbara Clifford

Submitted by Ginni Spencer  (Spencer is a Board member and past president of The Bedford Citizen)

It was with much sadness that I learned of Barbara Clifford’s death through The Bedford Citizen. Our community has lost a member who was not only born, raised, and lived in Bedford her entire life, but also loved Bedford and was deeply committed to its well-being as a resident, business owner, and supporter of our many organizations.

One of those organizations was The Bedford Citizen. When we carried out our very first fund-raising drive about two years after we began publishing, Barbara was among our very first donors with a most generous gift. For a fledging organization like ours at the time, this was not only a significant financial assist, but more importantly, an endorsement of our effort. If Barbara Clifford believed in what we doing, we knew we were headed in the right direction. We are grateful for her support at that time and over the years since then.

On a personal note, my husband and I met Barbara when we made our first purchase of a home in Bedford. Her sincere enthusiasm for Bedford as a place to live and raise a family was as much a factor in our decision as the house itself. Her enthusiasm never waned over the next many decades as we got to know her better. She was kind, wise, generous, and had a wonderful sense of humor. Her example, I am sure, will be cherished and carried on by many people in Bedford who knew and admired her.
