The 2022-23 Bedford High School boys’ basketball season ended in disappointment on Thursday evening with a 50-46 loss at Dartmouth High School in the first round of the MIAA Division 2 state tournament.

The 16-5 Bucs had no answer for the Indians’ 6-7 junior center Hunter Madison, who scored 29 points, including 11 of 14 from the foul line.

They also had no answers for Dartmouth’s zone defense, which took away Bedford’s potent inside game. The Bucs had 19 baskets, of which eight were from beyond the three-point arc. That hasn’t been Bedford’s forte all year; in the fourth quarter the team missed nine of 10 attempts from long distance.

The other consequence of the outside game was that Bedford never got to the foul line the entire four quarters. Dartmouth had a 13-0 advantage from the stripe, missing just three times, while being held to 18 field goals and just a single three-pointer.

A trifecta from BHS junior Justin Liberman with 14 seconds to go cut the lead to 48-46. Bedford, which fell behind two minutes into the second quarter and never regained the lead, battled back to the final whistle. The Bucs actually outscored Dartmouth in three of the four periods, but the home team’s 17-10 advantage in the second quarter proved decisive.

Eric Miles was the only Buccaneer in double figures, scoring all 11 of his points in the third quarter. Justice Buchannan and Camdyn Shoesmith, Bedford’s two inside threats, were held to nine and six points, respectively. Senior Andrew Blunt came off the bench to add seven points.
