Bedford Council on Aging Message for March 2023

March 3, 2023

Submitted by Alison Cservenschi, Director, Bedford Council on Aging

Happy March everyone! This month, on Sunday, March 12, daylight savings time begins. Remember to change all your clocks and spring forward. Monday, March 20 brings the first day of spring and I am always excited to think about what will return in my garden and I look forward to thinking about what I might plant this year.

This month, we are pleased to invite you to a very special Indian lunch at noon on Monday, March 27, thanks to the invitation of Rita Shah, founder of the Friends of the Indian Senior Citizens Organization (FISCO). Friends and neighbors are welcome to register for the $2, three-course vegetarian lunch provided by Holi of Bedford. This unique culturally rich program is funded, in part, by Emerson Hospital. Thanks to all the FISCO volunteers and Rita who helped plan, organize, and provide for this gathering. I am also grateful for the opportunity to welcome our Bedford neighbors of different cultures into the COA, share stories, celebrate our differences, and bring a new offering through this important partnership. For more information, see the latest COA Connections Newsletter.

Throughout the year, the COA Board and I work together on various initiatives. One area of focus this year is participating in the Dementia Friendly Massachusetts movement. This work involves bringing the community together, improving education, existing resources and expanding engagement opportunities for those living with dementia and their caregivers. This month, we have included the Dementia Friendly Forget-Me-Not symbol to identify existing programs that are appropriate for those with dementia, attending with a caregiver. Therapy dog visits, meals, music programs, chair exercise, Qi Gong, sing-a-long, gatherings, and visiting the monthly Memory Café are great ways to connect while living with beginning, middle, or advanced dementia.

Our no-cost AARP tax preparation continues this month and appointments are going fast. Please call if you would like assistance with your simple tax return through April 15. Also, as a reminder, there are Covid19 test kits available at the front desk if you need them.

In closing, thanks for your continued readership, kind words regarding this monthly letter, your thoughts, suggestions, participation, and support of each other. Take care, and like the snowdrops returning in early spring, we hope to see you soon.
