An Obituary: Lenore J. Dichard

March 27, 2023

Lenore J. (Whittemore) Dichard, 89, of Bedford, passed away on March 24, 2023, with her loving family at her side.

Lenore J. Dichard

Lenore was born in Nashua, NH, the daughter of the late George W. and Jessie (Greene) Whittemore. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1951. Soon thereafter, she married Donald Dichard. They were married 60 years until Don’s death in 2012.

Because her husband served in the United States Air Force, Lenore and her family lived on several bases in the US and abroad until making Bedford their permanent home in 1971.

Caring for her family was Lenore’s primary role, but she also worked as a secretary and other support positions at various locations, including at Minuteman Publications in Lexington and most recently, at the Bedford Council on Aging where she remained for 20 years until her retirement at 77 years young. Whether at home or at work, Lenore is remembered for her great sense of humor. She loved laughing and making people smile.

For most of her life, Lenore was a caregiver, first to her children and then to her husband, who suffered a life-changing stroke at a young age. She would often say that her life’s work was her family, and it was from them that she derived her greatest joy.

She is survived by her children, Matthew Dichard, Dawn McCormick Slepoy and her husband Stanley, Katrina Herrero and her husband Gustavo, and Neile Gordon and her husband John, her 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and her sister Betty Pelletier. She was predeceased by her sisters, Marjorie Casteris and Cynthia Leard.

Visiting hours will be held at Bedford Funeral Home, 167 Great Rd., Bedford, from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29. A funeral service celebrating Lenore’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 30 at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 25 Great Rd., Bedford, with interment to follow at Shawsheen Cemetery in Bedford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) research through the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, 8085 Saltsburg Rd., Suite 201, Pittsburgh, PA 15239. https://www.umdf.org/lhon/
