Vote on New Superintendent Expected on Feb. 28

February 15, 2023

The Bedford School Committee is expected to select a new superintendent of schools at its next meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Committee Chair Brad Morrison said at Tuesday’s meeting of the board that he will include an agenda item for a vote.

Morrison said School Committee members over the next several days are undertaking reference checks for the four finalists.

They are Dr. Portia Bonner, former superintendent of schools in New Bedford and East Haven, CT; Cliff Chuang, Senior Associate Commissioner at the Massachusetts Department of
Elementary and Secondary Education; Dr. Matthew Janger, principal of Arlington High School; and Dr. June Saba-Maguire, assistant superintendent of the Brockton Public Schools.

Morrison, who also chairs the search committee, noted that each finalist spent a day last week in the Bedford schools, meeting with students, faculty and staff, as well as community members and the School Committee.

In addition, each candidate was available to the community on a one-hour remote forum on Monday evening. Comments on any of the candidates will be accepted through Wednesday through links on the superintendent search website page (https://www.bedfordps.org/sites/g/files/vyhlif2786/f/uploads/superintendent_search_committee_update_-_february_9_2023_1.pdf).

There have been many comments already, and “there’s lots to read because we had great enthusiasm and participation from the community,” Morrison said.

“In different ways, each of the four finalists has said the process made them want to be in Bedford even more,” he said.

Committee member Ann Guay thanked “all the parents and staff who participated in the interviews.”
