SNOW DAY??? When I was a kid….

February 28, 2023

Bedford had its first snow day of the year on Tuesday. It was only a couple of inches of snow which always brings out us old timers who remember what we had to endure when we were young. The story of walking eight miles barefoot uphill both ways to get to school in a blizzard comes to mind. There is a whole generation still around that lived through the Blizzard of 1978. Did you hear about the Blizzard of 1978? (cue the eye roll). In 1978, we had well over 12 feet of snow with wind gusts of more than 1,000 miles an hour.
The temperatures dropped so low and so fast that everyone’s thermometer broke, all at once. Yet, we still had school, and….outdoor lunch eating gruel.

Imagine having to walk nine miles to school, uphill in that kind of weather. Only to realize
that the walk home was 10 miles with an even steeper hill to climb, and you still
didn’t have shoes.

We hope you enjoyed your snow day, when I was a kid….

Editor’s Note: The Scallion is a lighthearted attempt to poke gentle fun at ourselves. It’s satire and not to be taken too seriously.
