School Board Expected to Pick a Superintendent on Tuesday Night

February 27, 2023

The School Committee is expected to select Bedford’s next superintendent of schools at its meeting on Tuesday evening, starting at 7 p.m.

Chair Brad Morrison on Sunday confirmed that the agenda includes what may be the final “superintendent search update.”

The candidates are:

  • Dr. Portia S. Bonner. Former superintendent of schools in New Bedford and in East Haven, CT;
  • Cliff Chuang, senior associate commissioner at the Massachusetts Department of
    Elementary and Secondary Education;
  • Dr. Matthew Janger, principal of Arlington High School;
  • Dr. June Saba-Maguire, the Brockton schools’ assistant superintendent of program development, expansion, community partnerships, and engagement.

Morrison said that since each of the four candidates spent a day in the schools interviewing and meeting students, teachers, and parents earlier this month, School Committee members have been checking references and other background sources.

The superintendent search began four months ago, following Philip Conrad’s announcement that he will retire at the end of the academic year.
