Rauch Grabs Division 4 State Championship in the 600

What a day Wednesday was for the Bedford High School indoor track and field teams in the MIAA Division 4 state championships.

The boys’ team, led by Carter Rauch’s first place in the 600-meter run and Jonny Garraway’s second place in the mile, finished seventh. Both are juniors.

The girls’ team, with senior Jessica Lin taking second place in the shot put, came in 13th.

Rauch’s time of one minute, 25.23 seconds was 0.11 seconds ahead of the runner-up. 

Garraway, at four minutes, 35.08 seconds, was 0.18 seconds off the winning time.

The boys’ four-by-800-meter relay team of Josh Garraway, Oren Brosgol, Jonny Garraway, and Carter Rauch placed third in the state meet with a time of 8:34.36.

They will all be advancing to compete in the All-State Indoor Championship on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury.

So will Lin, whose second-place throw was 34 feet, 6.25 inches. She also broke the BHS girls’ shot put record on her way to the Dual County League championship last Saturday with a distance of 37 feet, 4.25 inches. The previous record, set in 2012, was 36 feet and 10.25 inches.   

Also at the state meet, the girls’ 4×800-meter team of Grace Niu, Elena Protasowicki, Addi Poulter, and Anna Massaro placed sixth with a time of 10:33.90.

Last weekend at the league meet, both the boys’ and girls’ teams finished second among the DCL small schools. Rauch finished second in the 600 and Garraway placed fourth in the 55-meter high hurdles.
