Letter to the Editor: McGinley Brings Strong Skills to the School Committee

Submitted by Kim Howell

As an active duty military spouse living on Hanscom Air Force Base, my children have had the opportunity to grow from worldly kids to well-rounded adults at Bedford High School. I am ecstatic to hear that Sarah McGinley – a fellow military spouse – has been nominated for the Bedford School Committee. In the six years that we have been part of the Bedford community, Sarah has been an incredible example for my family and others to show us how Bedford can be more than just a place to live for the next few years – that it could become home.

Sarah has invested her time and showed allyship in arenas like advocating for flexible learning options for children – like one of mine – with health concerns. During the COVID pandemic, Sarah was able to organize a group of like-minded Bedford citizens, gain consensus on a point of view for a very ambiguous situation, obtain anecdotes and signatures, and ultimately helped Bedford families to ensure that our kids had the option to safely learn remotely. Participating in this process, using my citizenship the way Bedford and other like-minded communities intended, made me feel included. In the 18 years that my family has spent in communities that are not ‘our own,’ it was a very meaningful experience.

Sarah has also been an incredible resource to help Hanscom families understand all of the wonderful things that are happening in the Bedford community and how to actively participate. She can be seen at numerous town events and frequently encourages Hanscom community members to make the trek ‘off base’ for Breakfasts with Santa, school plays, sporting events, and more.

With Sarah’s legal background, there is nobody more qualified to solve the multi-faceted problems that parents and community members face when trying to do what’s best for our children and neighbors. When called upon, Sarah is able to ask the right questions, quickly synthesize information, and take swift action to see things through. I am impressed not just with Sarah as an amazing mother, ally, and friend but as someone who can build bridges and get things done.

I would like to encourage all Bedford citizens to vote for Sarah in the upcoming election. She will continue to serve our community and make sure that diversity leads to inclusion, which is something that makes Bedford special.
