Investigation Underway After Racial Slurs Found in ‘Various Places’ at Bedford High School

February 6, 2023

Law enforcement and school authorities are investigating the source of racial slurs reported to the administration at Bedford High School on Monday afternoon.

Principal Heather Galante, in an email to the BHS community, said the writing was “in various places throughout the high school.”

She asked parents to “reach out to the high school administration or Officer Justin Brooks if your child has information that will be helpful in our investigation.”

Galante wrote that this issue will be addressed as part of assemblies planned for Tuesday and Friday, as well as during the Wednesday advisory periods.

“These acts of hate create an unsafe school environment. Many students and adults will be unsettled,” she wrote. “Our counselors will be available tomorrow and throughout the week should your child need additional support.”

“We take incidents of hate extremely seriously as they do not represent the values of our schools or our community,” said Superintendent of Schools Philip Conrad in a prepared statement. “Acts of bias and hate are counter to our core values and mission of providing a safe and inclusive school for all students and staff.”

“While policies guide our response to these incidents, the incidents themselves provide opportunities to reinforce our commitment to belonging, diversity, and tolerance,” he continued. “Our administrative team, guidance counselors, teachers, and staff will be available to support our entire school community.”

Galante said “Our students often remark that Bedford High School is an inclusive environment and that students have strong connections with adults in the building. This is the time to lean on those adults as we work to solve this hateful act and take steps toward healing as a school community.”
