Bedford Council on Aging Message for February 2023

February 2, 2023

Submitted by Bedford Council on Aging

Hello Everyone,

February 2023 already, the 2nd month of 2023! I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying blue skies after a snowy day. Groundhog Day, on February 2, brings hopes for a special groundhog to emerge, to not see his shadow and bless us with an early spring. I love seeing the snowdrops peep out of the snow.

Recently I have been working with Minuteman Senior Services to, hopefully, bring back the Monday, Wednesday and Friday lunches this year. Logistics are currently being worked out between Minuteman, Carleton Willard and the COA. However, we need delivery drivers and Minuteman needs volunteers to make this happen. Volunteer roles include collecting and delivering prepared food, room set up, welcoming patrons, serving, and clean up. My hope is to get this program back up and running so that we can enjoy each other’s company again over a great, nutritious, affordable meal. If you are looking for an ongoing volunteer opportunity with this popular lunch program, or know someone who might be, please see page 12 of the latest COA newsletter for more information on how to apply with Minuteman Senior Services. If you are interested in driving for this program please call the COA for more information.

In cultural news, February is Black History Month. This is an important month to pause and recognize the significant people and historical events of the African diaspora. Thank you to Bedford Embraces Diversity for their dedication and work with the annual Martin Luther King Community Day of celebration, learning, and service. The COA is holding a special event in honor of Black History on February 27th at 10:30 a.m. Please join us! Recently, more of Europe are observing this important month, in October, which I believe, is a positive step towards acceptance and understanding of each other.

I hope you are ‘prepared’ for a busy tax season this year. We are very fortunate to continue our partnership with the wonderful AARP tax volunteers who will be available for appointments in February and March. Our AAPR tax group have truly weathered the COVID storm to bring this service to you in a variety of ways. For more information on our free tax preparation service, what to expect this year and how to sign up, please see the back page of the February newsletter.

Finally, thank you for your continued engagement and connection with us. We appreciate your participation and hope that by working together we can bring back our much loved and missed lunches! On behalf of the COA staff, BLT and myself, please accept our fond affections on Valentine’s Day! We are thinking of you, always and are here for you when you need us. Be well, take care and we hope to see you soon in-person, virtually, via email or over the phone!
