Town Census: Birthdays

January 12, 2023

[This is the first installment of looking at the Bedford Town Census data. Part 2 examined first names and Part 3 looked at a random mix of data.]

This week, the Annual Town Census landed in Bedford mailboxes. It’s important to return to the form. As stated on the back: “compliance with this State requirement provides proof of residence, protection of voting rights, veteran’s bonus, housing for the elderly and related benefits as well as providing information for your community.” One of the resources the List of Residents creates is information for first responders.

Fred Rogers asked, “Who are the people in your neighborhood?” With the help of Town Clerk Bridget Rodrigue, we’ve decided to provide some information for our community from the List of Residents (or at least the 11,283 residents from households that sent back their 2022 town census form and are over 18 years old, along with some data from the 2021 American Community Survey and 2020 Decennial Census).

According to the 2021 American Community Survey, the median age of the 14,383 Bedford Residents is 43.2 years old, five years older than median age for Middlesex County. The average age is closer to 49.
The data breaks down by age group in the following way:

The 2022 List of Bedford Residents says our oldest citizen will turn 109 next month. We have 16 residents who have lived for at least 100 years with nine more getting ready to join the century club before 2023 ends.

We have nine Leap Day babies! Two dozen residents on the list were born on the 4th of July and 35 New Year’s Day babies. Our most popular birthday is May 12 (46 celebrants), followed by July 6, Aug. 28, Nov. 13 and Dec. 28 (all with 44 birthday folks). After Leap Day, our least populous birth dates are Christmas Day (16 residents), Jan. 29 (17 residents) and today, Jan. 12 when we wish a Happy Birthday to 18 Bedfordites. Christmas Day is also the least common U.S. birthday after Leap Day.

The world’s most common birthdays (Sept. 9, 19 and 12) come in at the 88th and 33rd most common birthdays in Bedford. Sept. 9 & 12 are celebrated by 34 residents and 39 report Sept. 19 as a birthday.

While Tuesdays and August are the most common day of the week and month to be born in the US, according to CDC data, Fridays and July win out in popularity for Bedford residents. Of all of the dates in a month to be born, the greatest number of Bedford residents were born on the 28th of a month (409 folks), while it makes sense that the 31st holds the fewest birthdays (there are fewer months with that many days) at 218 residents.

If you are wondering about zodiac signs, the nurturing and loyal nature of those born under the sign of Cancer (9.64%) lead the pack in Bedford, which is fairly far above the estimated US percentage of June 21- July 22 birthdays (8.5%). Scorpios, which rule the estimated US percentage (9.6%), those born under the most misunderstood sign in Bedford rank 8th most common (out of 12 zodiac signs) at 7.96% of residents on the List.

With Lunar New Year arriving on January 22, we enter a Year of the Rabbit – babies born into this Year of the Rabbit will join 8.38% of Bedford residents. The observant, hardworking, and courageous folks born in the Year of the Rooster in town have the most fellowship with 9.21% of other residents, while the honest and faithful Year of the Dog residents have the least frequent showing at 7.34%. Happy Birthday to the 363 residents on the List who have already had their birthday in 2023!

Great fun. Hope it was as much fun to compile as it was to study.
